Chapter Fourteen
Justin had taken only a few steps away from Dunroy’s front door when the reality of what he’d just committed to fully hit him. He was going to remarry, the one thing he’d sworn not to do.
And to a woman he’d already caught in another man’s room. A woman he couldn’t seem to keep his hands off.
Memories of the humiliation he’d suffered through Moira rammed him.
What the devil was he doing?
Before he could fully digest the question, let alone consider the answer, the hired hack pulled up alongside him. The driver tipped his hat as Phillip threw open the door.
”Get in,” his brother said, sliding across the hard leather seat to make room.
For once, Justin obeyed his twin’s order without argument.
Phillip gave the driver the address to his home and pulled the canvas flaps over the windows before asking, “What happened? Why were you in the house?”
”She was caught going through the gate,” Justin said.
”With you.”
”Yes.”
”Yes, and—?” Phillip prodded.
Justin glared at his brother, realizing he suspected what had happened, and wasn’t upset at all. He muttered, “You are a bleeding bastard.”
Phillip crowed his delight that he was right. “You couldn’t keep your hands off her.” He gave Justin a playful punch in the arm. “Come on, don’t be so surly. I saw how you were looking at her. You like her.”
”No, I don’t.” But then Justin’s honesty came out and he amended his words. “Well, she is a fetching thing.”
His brother enjoyed his discomfort. “Did Dunroy rake you over the coals?”
”And then some.” Justin took a breath and released it before saying, “Congratulate me. I’m about to be married.”
Instead of the pleased I-told-you-so reaction Justin anticipated, Phillip startled him by saying, “No.” He sat upright. “He can’t make you marry his daughter. This is absolute nonsense. The girl was running around in breeches. Was this some sort of scheme to trap you?”
”I thought you said you believed she’d be a good match,” Justin replied.
”She’s wealthy beyond anyone’s imagination, and you could use her money. However,” Phillip continued, “that doesn’t mean I’m going to sit idly by and allow my brother to be trapped into marriage. Ever since Dunroy married Regina Rumford, he’s been anxious to rid himself of his daughter. Everyone in London knows that. But she refused to go out until a decent mourning period for her mother had passed. This past season, Dunroy has brought her out but supposedly she hasn’t taken.”
”Francesca?” Justin was surprised. “I would have imagined every man in London would be lined up for her. She’s a spirited, handsome lass with a fortune.”
”And very strong opinions,” Phillip pointed out. “She was the one who refused all suitors. On the other hand, because of her father’s transgressions, she wasn’t truly considered good ton. “
Justin frowned. “What does that mean?”
”It means that the ladies of the ton, those who are high sticklers like Lady Bastone, were angry with her father and had set about showing their displeasure by snubbing him … and consequently his daughter.”
”What were they so upset over?”
”Francesca’s mother, Grace, was one of them.
